Epping Aquatic Centre Wayfinding System: A Clear Path to Accessibility and Community

Can wayfinding transform a space into an inclusive and engaging experience?

This project reimagines navigation at the Epping Aquatic Centre, addressing accessibility, clarity, and community identity. Tasked with redesigning the outdated system, I integrated user-centred design principles with Parramatta Council’s branding. As creative director, I conceptualised and implemented a cohesive wayfinding solution that blends functionality, inclusivity, and visual harmony, enhancing the user journey while celebrating local heritage.

Navigating Change: Guiding Every Lap

1. Clearing the Waters The outdated wayfinding system presented obstacles like poor accessibility, visual inconsistency, and typographic clutter. Conducting user research revealed diverse needs—from children and retirees to working professionals—each requiring tailored solutions. This informed a clear goal: a cohesive system prioritising ease, accessibility, and engagement. 2. Making a Splash with Visual Identity Inspired by the City of Parramatta’s branding, I developed a modern, bold design language. Using accessible sans-serif typography, vibrant yet grounded colours, and streamlined icons, the wayfinding elements harmonised with the centre’s aesthetic while improving functionality. Dual-language signage in Darug honoured Indigenous heritage, fostering inclusivity and local pride. 3. Charting the Path The user journey was optimised with a layered approach to signage: from street-front orientation to detailed lane markings. Mock-ups and placement plans ensured seamless navigation through decision points, orientation stations, and destination markers. Materials like recycled timber and non-corrosive metal reinforced sustainability and durability. 4. Diving into Accessibility Designed with inclusivity at its core, the system included tactile elements, optimised viewing heights, and colour contrasts for visibility. Future-proofing features, like space for digital integrations, were added to support evolving community needs. 5. Making Waves with Lasting Solutions The final system connects users with the space intuitively, enhancing their experience while fostering community engagement. A tribute to thoughtful design, the wayfinding solution unites the aquatic centre’s practical needs with its cultural and environmental context, creating a welcoming environment for all.
